New Article: Too much for the Dutch? How the Dutch baby boom affected kinship size in 2018

We’re glad to highlight the recent publication of the article “Too much for the Dutch? How the Dutch baby boom affected kinship size in 2018” on the N-IUSSP platform. Authored by Vera de Bel, the piece investigates how historical demographic trends continue to shape contemporary family networks in the Netherlands.

Drawing on Dutch kinship network data and comparative insights from Swedish research, the article explores how the post-World War II baby boom reverberates across generations, resulting in larger numbers of aunts, uncles, and cousins for later cohorts born after 1985. The piece also reflects on how changes in family formation, including divorce and multi-partner fertility, affect the size and structure of kinship networks.
